By many standards, today’s music industry is littered with cookie cutter performers singing prepackaged songs and flaunting half-baked talent. For rising country artist, Leah Sadler, the determination to go beyond the cookie cutter has molded her career, and as she is discovering, life is getting sweeter. Leah’s hard work has taken her from Lethbridge across the United States to share her songwriting skills and perform for fans. Leah’s proving she doesn’t fit the image of a cookie cutter country singer, and at just 15, the industry has only sampled a taste of what she’s made of.
The Sadler family moved to Las Vegas from their home in British Columbia when Leah was in elementary school. Leah’s mom, Corrine, remembers Leah’s love for music when she was very young, “She was asked what she wanted to be when she grew up, and Leah said she wanted to be famous singer.” Although they assumed her childhood dream would soon pass to more practical pursuits, Leah would prove that her head wasn’t merely in the clouds. With the support of her parents, Leah was enrolled in voice lessons at a local Las Vegas music school and she was paired with instructor, Jilla Roberts. Jilla saw the potential in Leah’s voice and character and confirmed that Leah’s talent went beyond just a pretty face and voice. Jilla’s instruction, support and connections encouraged the Sadler’s to go along for the ride–and Leah was in the driver’s seat.
As her skills blossomed, Leah began to put her thoughts and feelings into lyrics and her daydreams into melody. “I love country music,” Leah says. “I grew up listening to Reba McEntire, Tammy Wynette and Loretta Lynn. I admired the fact that they all wrote their own music and how they opened the door to the country music industry for women.”
Leah describes her sound as country/pop, and it has excellent crossover appeal. She finds inspiration in the places she goes, the people she sees and the experiences she’s had. For example, in one of Leah’s singles, “Living My Story,” she sings about the experience driving across 21 states with her family on their way to Nashville. In another song, “Love You This Way,” Leah expresses her feelings for a crush she’ll never see again. Leah wears her heart on her sleeve, and by doing so, brings a fresh and original maturity to her music.
Four years ago, the Sadler family moved back to Canada when Leah’s dad, Stan was transferred, and settled in Lethbridge. Leah currently attends Lethbridge Collegiate Institute and will be enrolling in grade 10 this fall. Although the scenery has changed, the music hasn’t stopped. Her hectic schedule demands that she home-school for some classes and Leah says she splits her time with school and music. When asked what she does in her spare time, she laughs and says, “What spare time?”
Leah’s precious time is spent recording, writing and performing. She has played her songs for block parties, local events, schools, senior’s facilities, and casinos. Although she usually performs solo, she will be performing this summer in Nashville with her studio band that includes the talents of keyboardist Harry Sharpe, guitarist Mark Matejka, bassist John Billings and drummer Shawn Fichter. These professionals have worked with the likes of Wynonna Judd, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Donna Summer and Peter Frampton.
Leah also recognizes the team that has helped her achieve this level of success to this point. She credits her Canadian producer Bruce Innes and her manager and teacher Jilla Roberts with providing the knowledge, perseverance and guidance she has needed to perform and record. Her family has also supported, sacrificed and cheered her on through the journey. “I couldn’t do what I do without my parents, my sisters Chloe and Kenna and my brother Michael,” Leah says. To her, family is what keeps her grounded and encourages her to do more.
Leah is looking forward to performing for the Country Music Awards Showcase in Nashville this summer where she will be playing for many of the big record labels. It is her goal to be signed by a major record company to take her dreams even further. She will be releasing her first full length CD this October and can’t wait to feel the energy playing for bigger crowds. “Someday I want to sing on the Grand Ole Opry,” she says. Leah needs to be careful what she wishes for: in her case, it will most certainly come true.
