Oh man! I have to tell ya I was the shiest person in my family! My first public recital was so nerve-racking for me. When it was my turn to sing I could barely hold the mic still, I was shaking so much! To deal with my nerves, I followed my instructor’s words, and did a few jumping jacks just prior to going on stage. As I sang, I blocked out everything around me, focused on what the song really meant to me, and treated the performance like a rehearsal. By the end of that song I not only moved the whole audience, but myself as well, and when I heard their applause I felt incredible!
It was from their amazing response that a new-gained belief in myself grew. Since then experience has taught me how to control and work my nervous energy into positive energy. As far as self-confidence goes, that comes with practice and experience. So practice, practice, practice! Just like studying for a school test, you feel more confident when you know the information really well. Also, perform as often as you can because it is practice and experience, together, that helps build your self-confidence.
Here’s a few little pointers that may help you; whenever you have free time to sing don’t be afraid to take a chance. Change up the song a little bit. Make it your own! Dance around in your bedroom, be silly, make faces, be willing to let go, and be a star!!! Really exaggerate, go out on a limb, and tell the story. People enjoy that! With time, you’ll know what works with your music and what doesn’t. Most importantly, have fun! If you sing because you love it, the rest will fall into place.
